Whilst there are 600 children recorded as having long-term ventilation in the UK, the medical profession believe that this figure is much higher. The reasons that children go onto LTV is because they cannot breathe without the help of a ventilator. The causes of breathing difficulties are many and as hospitals only record people being taken into hospital with a presenting condition, if they subsequently develop or need long term ventilation this may go un-recorded on the initial hospital records.
BREATHE ON was established to help families coping with this situation and often if it is difficult to find them, hence the need for our FIND A FAMILY CAMPAIGN. Many families are shy about talking about their problems, but it can be very helpful to talk to another Mum or Dad on how they managed to handle a situation or find solutions to a problem. Breathe On can help families to network by arranging meetings or putting families in touch with one another. A problem shared is often a problem solved.
Part of this campaign is also about data collection so that the charity can lobby opinion formers to support families dealing with this problem. So please register now and help all families with children in this condition.
