Breathe On UK was established specifically to help parents and families caring for young people dependent on LTV. Often they remain “below the radar" – hence the need and reason for our FIND A FAMILY CAMPAIGN.
Many parents and families are too shy to talk about their problems, but it invariably helps to talk with other people about how they manage to handle a specific situation or find solutions to a problem. Breathe On UK sets out to help families to network – if they so wish – by arranging introductions or putting families in touch with each other. We have seen that the wise old saying “a problem shared is often a problem solved” still comes true today.
15% INCREASE IN LTV NEEDS EVERY YEAR
There are more than 1,000 young people on record as requiring long-term ventilation in the UK. However, both medical opinion and our own research programme, point to a far greater number, allied to an estimated annual increase at (circa) 15 per cent. The stark reason that young people go onto LTV is that they cannot breathe without the aid of artificial support. There are many causes for becoming life-dependent on LTV. However, frequently it is not the condition that initially causes hospitalisation, and the need for LTV is triggered by another disorder. As a result the subsequent need for LTV may go un-recorded on the initial hospital record, and the latter affliction is overlooked in statistical research.
