The oesophagus takes food to the stomach and the trachea takes air to the lungs but with TOF this is the wrong way round and may need, depending on the severity of the condition, ventilator support.  This condition is fatal unless surgery is performed.   Also this condition puts children with heart conditions under enormous strain and these children will require vent support throughout their lives
